In order to even things out, water from the slug's cells is pulled out to join the salt-water mucus and dilute it, which it does, thereby dehydrating the slug from the inside out. For human beings, this much sal t is nothing compared to the water we have in our cells.
Our skin is also not a thin, permeable membrane. It is a thick organ, designed to block out everything from solar radiation to pricker bushes. We do possess some semi-permeable membranes on our person. Our eyes are pretty permeable, actually. If you were to salt your eye, you might feel what a slug is feeling. Therefore, the act of desiccating their entire body from the inside out like a batch of soggy french fries is not exactly the most humane way of dealing with them.
There are some very funny natural ways to keep slugs out of your garden, a few of which actually involve utilizing your own garbage. So if you happen to have a nice soft patch of earth beneath your lettuce or cabbage plants, crush up some eggshells or some nutshells and scatter them all around.
The slugs will back off rather than risk cutting up their bellies. Sprinkle fresh coffee grounds — not instant — around your potted plants or in your garden to repel slugs for at least a couple of days. Welcome birds or get some chickens Birds are great predators for slugs, so welcoming them into your garden will help to keep numbers down.
You could take it a step further and get some chickens too, who will happily take care of them for you and you might even get some eggs too!
Introduce hedgehogs This can be done by welcoming hedgehogs into your garden. Leaving food for them not milk and check your garden is hedge-hog friendly by covering drains and holes, checking for them before strimming and removing sports or fruit netting.
Read more about these friendly creatures here. Use a greenhouse Slugs and snails love salad leaves and many vegetable leaves. Installing a greenhouse may help to protect your greens, though this may not be the best environment for some vegetables and plants. Not only will these solutions help reduce numbers of pests and save your greens, but it will also be more wildlife-friendly too — you can sleep easy knowing that you are doing your bit for the environment.
For help on building a garden to combat slugs and snails in a friendly way, get in touch with Papillon. We have had three projects undertaken by Papillon and have been very pleased with each one. We have had very positive comments from friends and neighbours about the improvements to our property.
I love my garden steps. From the initial consultation with Angelique, she listened to our requirements and returned with a fabulous design. On site, the team were friendly, efficient and organised and worked hard to complete the project on time and with minimum disturbance.
We were delighted with the end result and feel it has really added to our home. Is there a humane way of doing it? And how on Earth did they get inside in the first place? Slide down to find a somewhat slimy trail of insights. As slugs and, to a lesser extent, snails can squish themselves into tiny spaces, it may be difficult to find out how they enter your house.
Even though most have a small shell or internal shell , they can fit through most small holes, such as the small holes that may exist around pipework. A slug is likely to exit the house during daytime, escaping the dehydrating sun and any predators in the best moist corner they can find.
