Meals on Wheels America is the oldest and largest national organization supporting the more than 5, community-based senior nutrition programs across the country that are dedicated to addressing senior hunger and isolation. By providing funding, leadership, research, education and advocacy support, Meals on Wheels America empowers its local member programs to strengthen their communities, one senior at a time.

Seniors represent a dramatically growing segment of the hunger crisis in America. There are nearly 9 million seniors facing the threat of hunger today and by this number will be nearly equal to the populations of our country's four largest cities combined. They gathered in the basement of the Lincoln Street Methodist Church in February to serve a hot lunch to about a dozen seniors and then delivered 14 Meals on Wheels on paper plates wrapped in newspaper.

We enrich the lives of seniors, and assist them in maintaining independence, by providing nutritious food, human connections and social support. We also use our expertise and capacity to serve other nutritionally at-risk populations.

Today the Meals on Wheels People produces 8, nutritious meals five days each week in a 14,square-foot commercial kitchen located in the heart of Multnomah Village. Meals are then delivered to dozens of dining centers throughout Multnomah, Washington and Clark counties where they are served at noon to older adults in center dining rooms or sent out as Meals on Wheels to frail, homebound elderly. Meals on Wheels SA provides support to members of the community to live independently.

Share Now. To Top. By charging recipients a small fee, Meals on Wheels was able to provide better quality meals. It also removed the stigma of charity, despite the fact that the service relied heavily on unpaid volunteers.

There are many thousands of volunteers and clients throughout Australia and the service is particularly important in regional and rural areas. Today the service is not without its problems.
