Also, people can be single parents for a variety of reasons. My cousin's wife just died of appendiceal cancer and left him with four children under six. I haven't read all of them our library is missing some of the series , but I did notice that there's never a dad, which is why I came online to look and see what others thought.
I sincerely hope Mama Llama is a single mom, instead of a stay at home mom who takes on all the childrearing. I think that's a bit optimistic of a viewpoint, but it would be nice. Otherwise it's just transcribing the conservative family norms. I wish there were more dads in children's books, actually, not being exceptional, but just a dad.
Threatens so many books where you only see a woman taking care of her kid. Nicole I never noticed the absence of a daddy llama; however, my three year old daughter did. She loves the Llama Llama books and has her father and I read them to her at bedtime. The other night she asked where the daddy llama was and was very concerned. I thought this was pretty smart for a 3-year-old to notice. Great opportunity to teach her how not all families have a mommy and daddy.

I tend to notice when dads are not pictured or mentioned since my kid has two moms. But I'm also astutely award of our two dad families and how mom is every where in all media.
Jaime That's interesting. I never noticed that, either. Kirby has a boy raised by a single mom. Also, though not a book, in the Toy Story movies, Andy is raised by a mom, but there is never any mention of a dad.

This book is about a Llama who misses her Mama Llama while he is off at school for the day. Llama Llama is nervous about leaving his Mama Llama. He starts to wonder if Mama Llama will ever come back for him. His classmates cheer him up by showing him how fun school can be. Before he realized it Mama Llama was back to pick him up. He realized that he had nothing to worry about that his Mama Llama would never leave him. I would use this book in the hospital because a lot of children experience separation anxiety.
Kids get left at the hospital while their parents are at work and they fear that they will never come back. This book can help them by relating to a character that knows just how they feel. A good activity to do with this book would be some kind of finding and hiding games to get their minds off of when mommy or daddy will come back.

Mama Llama makes sure that Llama Llama is ready in the morning by going through morning routines such as making the bed, brushing teeth, and eat some breakfast. He becomes nervous and worried about missing his Mama and cries for Mama Llama. His classmates come and comfort him saying that it will be ok and to come and play with them. By the end of the day, Mama Llama comes back for Llama Llama and learns that he loves both his Mama and school.
The main theme in this picture book is about growing up, trust and prepares children for growth. Trying to make new friends can be hard and feeling comfortable in a new classroom can be challenging. I give this book five stars because I really enjoyed how the author uses rhyming to engage the reader and how the other characters in the book are different animals. I recommend this book for young readers because they can connect with the main character when they experienced that separation anxiety.

Okay, my 2 year old daughter and I love, love, love this book. The tempo, the rhyme, the illustrations, the everything. She felt like she could relate to it so she sympathized with the main character and she noticed the subtle humor. I will credit the book with one more thing. This will be put on my To Buy list.
