So, how are they different? Tae kwon do left it up to me to learn blocks through trial and error while sparring with a partner. For me karate turned out to be much deeper in the sense that I would get hit sometimes while learning to block techniques but I was never just hit and told to block.
In other words they taught me to block then made me apply it. I never got that in two years of tae kwon do training. I would get hit in tournaments but never shown how to block and counter. The systematic training of practical blocks makes me a better tournament fighter also.
Karate does very few jump kicks while tae kwon do does a lot of jump kicks. Karate focuses mainly on what works for in close fighting.
We spend a lot of time very close to our training partners where it is most dangerous. We believe if you are far enough away that you can only get hit by a step then a kick that you are far enough away to avoid the fight.
